National Apprenticeship Week 2023

National Apprenticeship Week is a celebration of apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the economy. It’s an opportunity to recognise the important role that apprenticeships play in gaining the skills and knowledge needed to succeed. To celebrate, all of our colleagues have been given free access to LinkedIn Learning to help everyone enhance their learning and development.

At LightSpeed, our apprentices are given the opportunity to work in various departments, learn new skills and gain practical hands-on experience, giving them a comprehensive understanding of the industry, which helps them prepare for their future careers.

So, let's hear what our apprentices have to say about their experience here at LightSpeed!

Alastair Boothby – I've been an apprentice with LightSpeed for 9 months now. During this time, I have worked in several departments within LightSpeed and have been given an opportunity to see how most of the business works. Everyone has been very welcoming and have helped me to understand their role and processes. I have been away for training on multiple occasions, and this has been a very useful background. I hope to move onto a planning-based role as my apprenticeship course comes to an end!

Shaylan Wilson - Hey, I'm Shaylan and I have been on the apprenticeship programme since May 2022. Unlike traditional Apprenticeships, LightSpeed offer a completely different and innovative scheme. During my apprenticeship, I have been to various departments within the company and gathered knowledge on their day-to-day routines. This currently involves the planning department, installation department, network build and quality and compliance department. I have enjoyed the dynamic set-up that LightSpeed offer as it gives me the perfect theory to practical balance.

Lewis Shepard - Being 28, I thought that an apprenticeship wouldn’t be something available to me. LightSpeed has shown me that age is just a number in regards to this and the help and support I’ve received on my learning journey so far has been phenomenal – I can’t wait to carry on my career and learn about the telecoms industry everyday with LightSpeed.

Lian Hester - I never imagined an apprenticeship would be something I could afford to do! I’m 29 and all my previous experience fell within a completely different industry. However, the opportunity with LightSpeed popped up which included an extensive learning plan with various courses - extremely valuable to this industry. My experience with LightSpeed has been outstanding. I’ve gained a detailed overview of telecoms and in-depth knowledge from highly experienced managers, supervisors and engineers. Everyone I have met within the company has been great, including the HR team. They recognise and celebrate international days that employees can get involved with and I’ve never worked for a company so inclusive! Becoming an apprentice really is the best decision I ever made for my career.
