VoIP vs. Landline: what’s the difference?

By the end of 2025, the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), which uses older analogue technology, will be turned off. Work’s already underway to replace it with a digital solution, which will offer faster and more reliable communication via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). So, if you still have a regular landline, now’s the time to switch!

The future of communication

VoIP is the smart way of making phone calls using broadband instead of old landlines. Transforming your broadband into a gateway for crystal-clear, hassle-free conversations with anyone, anywhere.

How does a VoIP phone work?

When you use VoIP to make a call over your WiFi, the information is turned into tiny packages and sent through digital networks that link devices like your computer or phone. At the other end, the info is put back together. It works in a similar way to apps like Zoom or WhatsApp.

Why VoIP?

-          Setup made simple

Setting up a landline can feel like you’re navigating a jungle of cables. With VoIP, you just plug in, connect to the internet, and voila! No need for an IT degree – even your tech-averse neighbour can handle it.

-          Future-proof your home phone

Times are changing and regular landlines are on the verge of extinction. The big switch-off is upon us, and it's not just a random date on the calendar. It's a wake-up call to step into the digital age and bid farewell to the relics of the past.

-          Freedom to roam

VoIP liberates you from the shackles of a fixed phone location. Whether you're on a beach, in the office, or just roaming around the house, your phone goes where you go.

-          Features galore

VoIP is way more than a replacement for your landline – it’s a next-level upgrade. It can do stuff like email you your voicemails, forward calls to other devices, and even let you video chat.

Ready to hang up your old landline?

A world of seamless communication awaits. If you haven't joined LightSpeed yet, enter your postcode to see if we’re already in your area. Choose a plan that suits your internet needs without breaking the bank, and don't forget to add in the VoIP option! If we’re not quite with you yet, register with us and we’ll give you a shout when your home is ready to connect!

A few things to note

To kick off VoIP calling, you'll need the essential hardware and software. That could be a computer, smartphone, or a dedicated VoIP phone. Keep in mind that LightSpeed doesn't supply the handset; we deliver the VoIP functionality to your home router.

Because VoIP works through your broadband connection, you’ll need an alternative means to reach emergency services – just in case your internet goes down. Your mobile phone network is typically involved in this.
